Tenor for Opera and Concert
Jan Kristof Schliep completed his diploma as an opera singer at the Hanover University of Music and Drama Hanover. He then spent ten seasons as a resident ensemble member at the TfN · Theater für Niedersachsen ((Theatre for Lower Saxony)) in Hildesheim, specializing in roles as a Spiel- and character tenor.
In recent years, he has focused increasingly on roles from the character and youthful heldentenor repertoire as a freelance artist. He is distinguished by his excellent diction and »consistent stage presence«, as frequently noted by critics.
He has appeared, among others, at Theater Altenburg Gera, where his roles have included Walter in Die Passagierin (Weinberg) and Ktesiphar in d’Albert’s Die toten Augen. At Stadttheater Bremerhaven, he performed the role of Altoum in Turandot, and at Theater Krefeld Mönchengladbach he returned to the role of Walter in Die Passagierin.
In the 2025/26 season, he continues his run as Walter in Mönchengladbach, takes on the role of Licht in Der zerbrochene Krug (Ullmann) at DNT Weimar, and appears at Staatsoper Hannover in the children’s opera Wurst (Schwab) as well as Altoum in Turandot. He will also be seen as Count Elemer in Arabella at Theater Altenburg Gera.
He is also highly active as a concert singer. His repertoire spans classical works such as Haydn’s The Creation and Bruckner’s Te Deum to roles like the Roasted Swan in Orff’s Carmina Burana.
In addition to his performing career, Jan Kristof Schliep is deeply engaged in the study of the German language in singing and regularly works as a language coach for vocalists. Beyond the operatic field, he offers presentation and moderation courses in German, English, and Dutch, catering to both singers and non-singers alike.
